Conference ObjectiveThis conference is the 2nd meeting of the Asia-Pacific EU Studies Association (the inaugural conference was held in Seoul in May 2003). The Asia-Pacific EU Studies Association brings together ECSA / EUSA associations across the region - from India in the west to China and Japan in the east and Australia and New Zealand in the south. The conference is sponsored by EUSA-New Zealand, the NCRE and the European Commission. The programme is intentionally inclusive while focussing on the conference theme of "Outside Looking In'. Often European Integration can look distinctly different when viewed from afar, and it is the hope of this conference that such new perspectives can be generated. Conference LocationThe conference will be held in the William Sutton and Hurst Seager rooms at the Christchurch Arts Centre. The entrance to these rooms can be found at the corner of Rolleston Ave and Hereford Street, in the Arts Centre Venues building (see map). Conference panels, the keynote speech and the Diplomatic Roundtable will be situated downstairs in the Hurst Seager room. For the Post Graduate poster session, conference registration, lunches and morning & afternoon teas, the William Sutton room will be used. The Arts Centre is located in the central city, next to Hagley Park, the Canterbury Museum, the Christchurch Art Gallery, and close to many cafes, restaurants and smaller galleries. Originally the home of Canterbury University College, since the University of Canterbury moved to it's current site in 1975, the Arts Centre has become a cultural centre at the heart of Christchurch. RegistrationA registration desk will be set up in the William Sutton room on Thursday from 2.00 pm onwards. Registration will also be available at this desk from 8.00-9.00 am on Friday morning. Please endeavour to register before 8.30 am Friday. Conference packs and name badges will be available at the registration desk. Name BadgesYou will be issued with a name badge upon registration. Please wear this at all times so your fellow participants can more easily approach you. Post Graduate AwardsThe conference is offering two sets of awards for post graduate participants. One award of $NZ200 will be offered for the best post graduate paper presented at the conference, while two awards of $NZ150 will be offered for the two best post graduate posters on display. Conference ReceptionThe conference reception is being held at Annie's Wine Bar, a restaurant in the Christchurch Arts Centre just around the corner from the conference venue. This will follow the keynote speech, presented by Dr. Garret FitzGerald, former Irish Prime Minister, from 6.30 till 7.30 pm. This reception will see the official launch of Repositioning Europe: perspectives from New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies. Both the book and the journal, Volume 1 Number 2 and Volume 2 Number 1, will be for sale over the course of the conference. All papers presented at the Outside Looking In conference will be considered as submitted for publication in the next edition of the journal, unless otherwise desired by the authors. Lunches, Morning and Afternoon TeasLunches, and morning and afternoon teas will be served upstairs in the William Sutton room at the Arts Centre on Friday and Saturday between the themed panels. These are catered for by the Arts Centre, but should you like to explore the local surrounds, there are many places for lunch or coffee within the Arts Centre itself or within easy walking distance (see below for a list of nearby cafes and restaurants). Conference DinnerThe conference dinner will be held at the Curator's House restaurant in the Christchurch Botanical Gardens, situated on Rolleston Ave, opposite the conference venue. It will cost an additional $NZ50.00 to attend, and seats are limited so please let the conference organiser know as soon as possible if you wish to come. Internet, Email and Computer AccessWhile there will be a PC available for use at the conference venue, for checking files or organising power point presentations, there will be no internet access available to conference attendees at the conference venue. However, there is an internet café close by in the Arts Centre which the conference organisers will be happy to point you in the direction of should you so require.
