Details of Research
My thesis will examine the impact of the EU enlargement on the EU-Thai economic and political relations. In May 2004 10 countries of the Central and Eastern European Countries, (CEECs) and the Mediterranean will become members of the EU and this historical event would create consequences, both positive and negative, to the EU-Thai economic and political relations. My intention is to identify these consequences and also the challenges that Thailand will have to overcome to maintain or improve her existing relations with the EU in the future. Although this research will analyze two aspects of the EU-Thai relations, economic relation and political relation, they are part of the whole picture. This thesis will investigate the consequences on trade and investment between the EU and Thailand resulting from enlargement. This thesis will also focus on the impact of enlargement on political co-operation between the EU and Thailand and, in part, ASEAN. My special interest lies in the CEECs because these countries are filled with opportunities which can benefit Thailand enormously if the correct path is taken. This thesis will attempt to suggest policies for the Thai government to develop or enhance economic and political relations with the acceding countries and the EU post enlargement. I will conduct two case studies to examine the impact of the EU enlargement: sugar industry and textile industry.
