National Centre for Research on Europe

European Union Roundtable Seminar Series Programme

Regular weekly meetings are held throughout the academic year on Fridays at 2:10 pm. Occasional seminars are also held to coincide with European and academic visitors to the University (times may vary).

The regular seminars will allow faculty and students to present their work on Europe and facilitate cross-disciplinary linkages. A major goal of the series is to demonstrate the breadth and depth of European-related research being conducted at the University of Canterbury, while past seminar series programmes are archived and can be accessed below.

Note: Speakers may be subject to change. To receive email notifications of weekly speakers and any changes, please email ncre@canterbury.ac.nz with "Please add me to the Roundtable Seminars List" in the subject line.

The Council of Europe and the Challenge of Integration management

The Council of Europe is not the European Council! Accordingly, in the first part of the presentation the audience will be introduced to the Council of Europe, Europe’s oldest and biggest intergovernmental organisation. Key institutional differences to the European Union as well as fields of cooperation will be outlined. The second part of the presentation is dedicated to a key issue of European political agendas and the question on how the Council of Europe and the European Union respond to it: Integration and Cultural Diversity management. After critically examining the four integration policies dominant in Europe, the presentation will outline latest trends and shifts in the political response to the challenge of (failed) integration. The legal and political framework will be discussed as well as the turn into action, introducing the audience to Europe’s integration management programmes.
