National Centre for Research on Europe

Prospective Students

Current NCRE StudentsWith the founding of the Centre for Research on Europe in 2000, the University of Canterbury signalled its commitment to the development of European and European Union Studies. In the intervening years, the now National Centre has firmly established itself as the intellectual and interdisciplinary focal point for the study of Europe in New Zealand, attracting visiting academics from all over the world, and supporting over 50 thesis students with special interests in European topics.

The European Union is New Zealand's most significant bilateral partner after Australia, and is one that continues to grow in importance. As such, one of the NCRE's primary objectives is to develop a new generation of New Zealand graduates with expertise in a range of European issues in order to foster New Zealand's ability to comprehend and interact with the new Europe.

Studying Europe from afar provides a number of advantages - of perspective, comparative analysis and of relative isolation from short-term trends. Importantly, the NCRE fosters research on the EU that is regionally relevant. For example, current research projects examine EU development policy in the Pacific, the EU's identity in the Asia-Pacific region and the external consequences of EU enlargement.

Our students are the life-blood of the NCRE, and new students will find the Centre a supportive, challenging and academically exciting environment.
